Joe Gallagher - The Magic of Mikhail Tal

Few players have captured the public imagination like the former World Champion Mikhail Tal. With his unique attacking style, he dazzled the chess world on the way to becoming the youngest ever World Champion (at that time) in 1960, winning friends around the world for both his entertaining play and engaging personality. Although Tal's championship reign was brief, he continued to delight his many fans with brilliant sacrificial games until his death in 1992.

In this book Grandmaster Joe Gallagher takes a fresh look at Tal's games and career, focusing on the previously neglected period from 1975 to 1992 during which he played some of his most accomplished chess. Despite periodic bouts of ill-health Tal occupied a place in the world's top ten for most of this period, winning any top-class events and securing dozens of wonderful victories, many of which are annotated in detail here.

John Nunn - Solving in Style

In this book, John Nunn, a top-class grandmaster who is also one of the world's finest solvers, explains the methods by which chess problems and studies are solved. Hannibal 1

The Story
Hannibal is developed by Sam Hamilton and Edsel Apostol. It has shared the same genes as Twisted Logic at its infancy and has mutated into a different and stronger entity when genetically combined with the LearningLemming genes.

The Inner Workings
Hannibal is a UCI chess engine that uses alpha beta as the main search algorithm with various computer chess specific heuristics. It uses a bitboard representation. It supports the Polyglot book format.

The Playing Style
Hannibal is a strategic player and relies on its very selective search, good endgame knowledge and an understanding of material imbalances. Hannibal's time management is optimized for the Fischer time controls.

The Team
Developers
Sam Hamilton is the Chief Technical Officer for a small research and development company where he works on predictive and course of action generation algorithms along with a number of related technologies. He is also author of the LearningLemming chess engine.

Edsel Apostol is a professional game programmer, software developer and college instructor. He used to play chess competitively but didn't find enough time to pursue it much further than that. He is also the author of the Twisted Logic chess engine.

Audy Arandela is a student and chess enthusiast that works with the Hannibal opening book and do some testing as well.

The Future

Nigel Davies - The Scotch Game

The Scotch Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4) is a lively alternative to the Ruy Lopez which has found favour amongst many leading Grandmasters. The top experts in the Scotch include former World Champion Garry Kasparov as well as Alexander Morozevich, Sergei Rublevsky and others. The space White takes early in the game can easily translate into a powerful attack against Black’s king. In addition to this White can often usually some damage on Black’s pawn structure by capturing Black’s knight on c6. These dual aims have certainly been giving Black plenty to think about.

On this DVD Nigel Davies introduces the viewer to the Scotch and first shows an easy way to get on board this opening via the Scotch Four Knights (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.d4). He then goes on to show how this can be built into a World class Scotch repertoire in which Black has more options but also comes under more pressure. Whilst the presentation is focussed mainly on those who wish to play White, Davies also suggests lines for Black. This makes it essential viewing for players wishing to play either colour. Video running time: 5 hours.

Nigel Davies has been an International Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Open Quickplay and U21 Champion. He has had considerable experience in both the Scotch and in teaching club level players.

The DVD also contains the whole training course in audio-format for Pocket Fritz 3.

Paul Petrovich Keres (1916-1975), ha sido uno de los grandes referentes de la historia del ajedrez mundial. En sus primeros años era un formidable jugador de ataque y luego de la Segunda Guerra Mundial se hizo más estratégico y demostró su eximia técnica en finales. Viktor Korchnoi - My Life for Chess Vol.1

Rogozenko - The Sveshnikov Reloaded

Over the last ten years the Sveshnikov variation of the Sicilian Defence has become an immensely popular opening, played regularly at all levels. Graham Burgess - The Taimanov Sicilian

The Taimanov Variation is one of Black's most flexible approaches to the Sicilian. With his "ideal" move order, Black maintains plenty of options while sidestepping some of White's most dangerous attacking plans. The main game-plan is counterattack, but unlike in many Sicilian lines, Black can tailor his plan of development according to how White arranges his pieces. The Taimanov has been used to good effect by many outstanding players of recent decades, notably Karpov, Polugaevsky, Andersson, and of course, Taimanov himself. This book discusses in detail all lines after 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cxd4 Nxd4 Nc6, including the "pure" Taimanov approach with Nge7 and the more popular "Paulsen" lines with ...Qc7. A Spanish Repertoire for Black

Behind Deep Blue

Building the Computer that Defeated the World Chess
In 1997, a computer developed by a team of researchers at IBM shocked the world by defeating world chess champion Gary Kasparov in a six-game match. Hsu began developing Deep Blue, the first computer to achieve such a feat, as a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University. Jan Timman - Curaçao 1962: The Battle of Minds that Shook the Chess World

The 1962 Candidates’ Tournament in Curaçao was one of the fiercest chess battles of all time. At the height of the Cold War, eight players contested the right to challenge World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik. The format of the tournament was a gruelling quadruple round-robin. Twenty-eight games were to be played on the tropical island, in a contest that lasted two months.

The air trembled with drama and intrigue. One of the favourites, the brilliant Mikhail Tal,was taken to hospital after 21 rounds and had to withdraw. Three other players from the Soviet Union, Keres, Petrosian, and Geller, were making suspiciously short draws when playing each other. The two American players came to blows over the services of the second they were supposed to share.

Bella Kortchnoi, whose husband took an early lead in the tournament, was a puppet in the hands of the scheming Rona Petrosian, the wife of the later winner. And one of the favourites was a lanky 19-year-old boy from Brooklyn, Bobby Fischer, who openly accused the Soviets of collusion and was later proven right.

In the end, Tigran Petrosian was the winner and went on to become the new World Champion the following year. But such was the impact of Fischer’s accusations that this was the last time such a battle was organised. Henceforth the challenger to the highest crown was determined in a series of matches. Curaçao 1962 was the last Candidates’ Tournament.

In Curaçao 1962, Jan Timman returns to this clash of giants and takes a fresh look at the games. Timman describes the course of the tournament and annotates the most important games (including 16 of Fischer’s!) in his usual lucid and instructive style. Curaçao 1962 revives a tradition of great tournament books, such as Alekhine’s New York 1927 and Bronstein’s Zurich 1953.
