La razón de ello es que el jugador de blancas a menudo ha asimilado mejor las leyes que gobiernan esta apertura y los planes con los que sacarle provecho. Dmitrij Oleinikov - The Colle System

The Colle System is rather a playing scheme than an opening. White plays d4, Nf3, e3, Bd3, 0-0, Nbd2 and possibly c3 - nearly regardless of what Black replies. Opening knowledge is of secondary importance. Exactly this is where the author starts his work, prioritizing on explaining plans, patterns and typical mistakes. For example, two chapters are titled "Ten inspirational games" and "Eight warning games". However, Oleinikov naturally also deals with opening theory in the classical sense and discusses the critical variations, at one point showing himself surprised: "To my amazement, none of my opponents has reached this crucial position so far". Certainly a hint that the second players know too little about the Colle System and rather play it by ear.

The author
Living in Moscow, Dmitrij Oleinikov is a journalist and has worked as a trainer for various Russian teams. He has also written the CD ROMs "Budapest Gambit" and "Bird Opening" published at ChessBase.

Sam Collins is an International Master from Ireland who made a GM norm in 2008. He has represented his country at five Olympiads, winning a gold medal at Bled in 2002. As a coach, he has lectured national junior squads and taught the master class at the renowned Berkeley Chess School. He is a former Irish champion and the reigning champion of Japan.

Alexei Shirov - The Philidor Defence (Videoless)

The modern form of the Philidor Defence arises via the move order 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 e5. After 4.Nf3 Nbd7, Shirov has introduced the pawn sacrifice 5.g4!? and achieved excellent results with it. Accepting the sacrifice leads to a very sharp position full of tactical possibilities and Shirov has been very successful with the white pieces in this line. However Shirov always strives for objectivity and shows the possibilities for Black to navigate the complications as well.

If you find the gambit 5.g4!? too double-edged then Shirov explains the tried and tested, solid strategic approach 5.Bc4 Be7 6.0-0 0-0 7.Re1 c6 8.a4. Also in this system Shirov presents many of his own games, discussing amongst other things the difficult, but extremely important question of whether or when White can advantageously advance in the centre with d4-d5. The third system presented by Shirov arises after the traditional Philidor move order 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4. Black can try ... exd4, a move popular in the 19th century and now back in fashion. First played by Horwitz against Staunton in 1846 it is popular with many 21st century GMs. Shirov analyses his game against Nisipeanu who with Bacrot is one of the leading proponents of exd4. Shirov shows how White can fight for the advantage here.

Peter Schneider - World Champion Capablanca

The Cuban Jose Raul Capablanca, World chess Champion 1921-1927, was considered at the height of his career to be almost unbeatable and received the nickname: „the chess machine“. Even those of his colleagues who reached the chess throne would call him a „genius“ (Alekhine) or „the greatest player in the history of chess“ (Fischer). This CD came into being as a result of the co-operation between various authors.

the main database with all available games by Capablanca, introduced by a biography. Approximately 300 of the games are annotated. The largest contribution to this database was made by Peter Schneider.

an appreciation by Dr Robert Hübner of the 1927 WCh-Match between Capablanca and Alekhine.

an endgame database by GM Mihail Marin. It contains 1 text and 14 games (or parts of games). The Romanian grandmaster casts some light above all on the moment of the transition to the endgame.

a tactics database put together by Martin Seifert. Perhaps there are not so many brilliant combinations known from Capablanca‘s play, but these do exist. The author has put together a database of 103 games, in each of which a training question (or questions) allows you to test and improve your vision.

Die Französische Verteidigung genießt den Ruf einer sicheren Spielweise gegen 1.e2-e4. World Champion Michail Tal (without videos)

The meteoric tempo the young Tal took the world top by storm with at the end of the 50ies and seized the world champion’s title from Botvinnik in 1960, is already sufficient to grant him a special place in the world of chess. But more than this, it was the art of his attacking play which conquered the hearts of the chess fans all over the world. Despite his short reign on the throne, Tal thus already became a legend during his lifetime. Johannes Sondermann, author of the biographic part of the CD, has made an objective portrait of the world champion's character. Sin embargo, sigue siendo un trabajo fundamental para el ajedrecista el análisis profundo de la estrategia ajedrecística y el discernimiento y valoración de las posiciones típicas, muchas de las cuales han ido cambiando desde los tiempos de Nimzowitsch: algunas ideas se han clarificado, y a la vez han surgido algunos conceptos completamente nuevos. El libro de John Watson cumple la necesidad de un trabajo integral en estos aspectos, profundo en el manejo de las posiciones modernas, y al igual que las teorías de Nimzowitsch -polémicas y revolucionarias en el momento de escribirse Mi Sistema- también con conceptos nuevos, que se estudian junto a los ya clásicos.

La primera sección de este libro trata acerca de la actual comprensión de temas clásicos como: las mayorías de peones, el centro, y las debilidades estructurales. Ciertamente, el ajedrecista tiene hoy una comprensión más refinada de todos esos temas tradicionales. A partir de allí, Watson discute nuevos conceptos, como los sacrificios de peones en pos de un juego más dinámico, la idea del buen "mal" alfil, el nuevo descubrimiento del tema de los caballos con roles útiles al borde del tablero y el famoso sacrificio posicional de calidad, idea que con tanta habilidad manejaron en la posguerra los campeones soviéticos.
Este profundo trabajo teórico pero orientado completamente a la práctica, se completa con secciones referidas al pensamiento profiláctico, el dinamismo, los conceptos modernos sobre las aperturas contemporáneas, y algunas reflexiones sobre el futuro del ajedrez.

La edición inglesa de este libro ("Secrets of modern Chess strategy"), ha sido premiada por la BCF (Brithish Chess Federation ) y por la USCF (United States Chess Federation), declarándolo "Libro del Año". Iakov Damsky - Attack with Mikhail Tal
