Alexander Khalifman - Opening for White According to Anand 1.e4 Vol. 8

by Alexander Khalifman

December 2006

320 pages.
The first part of the book analyzes some seldom played lines on move two for Black. The author devotes special attention to 2…b6, which is in fact much better than its reputation as well as to the Nimzovic – Rubinstein system 2…Nf6, in answer to which Khalifman recommends 3.Nc3, after which the game usually transposes to the main lines in most of the cases.
The second part of this book is devoted entirely to the O’Kelly system - 2…a6. It is worth mentioning that although it is a rare guest in the serious tournaments, it is frequently played in blitz games (including in Internet too). The author recommends 3.c3, which in the majority of cases leads to not so typical Sicilian positions, but the move a7-a6 often turns out to be just a loss of time.
The third part of the book deals with some rarely played lines after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4. Systems like 2…e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Qb6 (4…Bc5) as well as the Sicilian attack (2…e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Bb4) require from White exact knowledge of long forced lines.
Finally, the fourth part of this book is devoted to the Paulsen-Kann system (2…e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 a6). This variation is regularly played by Svidler, Ivanchuk, Kamsky, Rublevsky, Smirin and many other strong grandmasters and it is one of the really popular lines of the Sicilian Defence. That system has the reputation of being like the “Najdorf system” but for the lazy players: on the one hand you can obtain a dynamic position with various available resources to seize the initiative and on the other hand it requires considerably less concrete knowledge of forced variations unlike the Najdorf system. Khalifman recommends to White to counter it with 5.Bd3, after which there arises a “hedgehog” pawn-structure in the majority of cases. The order of moves is often not so important in that pawn-structure, but you must have an excellent idea about the possible plans for you and your opponent. The author has found plenty of new and fresh ideas in the most popular variation nowadays - 5.Bd3 Bc5 which doubtlessly will be of special interest for the reader.

TEXT comments and Figurine Algebraic Notations.

The French Defence has a special place in contemporary chess. It is an interesting and unique opening in which both opponents must solve difficult problems right after the very beginning of the game and most of these problems are characteristic only for that particular opening. This volume covers one of the most popular variations of the French Defence - the Winawer system (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4).

John Watson - Play the French, 3rd Edition

After the immense success of the first two editions, the chess world has been anticipating the next instalment with baited breath... and now the wait is over! Once again this is a fully revised edition of John Watson's classic Play the French, providing Black with a complete repertoire in the French Defence, one of the most strategically and dynamically complex opening systems. As is typical with his books, Watson often arms the reader with not one, but a choice of two and sometimes three lines against every main variation. Watson also presents a thorough grounding on the positional and tactical aspects of the opening and outlines the typical plans for both White and Black. This is particularly welcome for those newcomers wishing to add the French Defence to their openings armoury. Last, but not least, hardened French Defence devotees will find plenty of original analysis and suggestions to sink their teeth into.

The previous editions of Play the French were amongst the most powerful opening books of the 1980s and 90s, and this only added to the large number of French Defence advocates at every level of chess. Now Watson has updated his analysis for French Defence players of the new millennium.

Andrew Martin -- ABC Benko Gambit 2nd Edition (Videoless)

Black sacrifices a pawn as early as move three for enduring positional pressure. On this new ChessBase DVD, International Master Andrew Martin traces the history of the gambit from the games of Opocensky, Lundin and Stoltz back in the 1930s, through the golden age of Bronstein, Benko and Browne all the way to the present day, where the gambit is as popular as ever. Martin describes the main themes and ideas of the gambit and gives sound guide lines, so that any one who wants to play for the initiative with Black and play the Benko Gambit, will be very well equipped. Do you want to play for the initiative with Black? Then the Benko Gambit is surely for you. The DVD contains 6 hours video lessons, the latest ChessBase 9.0 Reader as well as an unannotated database of the contents. The 2010 update includes many recent games from top-class play and produces a balanced portrait of how the gambit stands today. Critical lines such as the Fianchetto variation with an early Rb1 are examined closely and Black is found to be in good shape. The Benko Gambit seems as playable as ever! Video running time: 6 hours

Curso EDAMI 36 Siciliana Vte.

Karsten Mueller - Bobby Fischer: The Career and Complete Games of the American World Chess Champion

The Ultimate Fischer Collection!

The Chess Publishing Event of the Decade! The years after the Second World War saw international chess dominated by the Soviets Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Petrosian and then Spassky held the world crown, treating it as if it were almost an integral part of their country s heritage. There were occasional flashes of brilliance in the West Reshevsky, Najdorf, and later Larsen but no one really mounted a serious challenge to the Russian hegemony. Then, in the mid-1950s, a lone genius from Brooklyn emerged. Obsessed with chess, all his waking hours became devoted to finding truth on the 64 squares. It was an unrelenting, sometimes frustrating quest, but he persevered, eventually emerging as perhaps the greatest natural chess talent ever. It was clear from his early years as a gifted prodigy through his stormy ascent of the Chess Olympus, no one had ever rocked the chess world quite like Bobby Fischer. His raw genius for the royal game, combined with an indefatigable will to win, made him one of the most feared chessplayers of all time a genuine living legend. Now, for the first time, every single one of his tournament and match games is presented with insightful explanations and analysis. Best-selling chess author, German International Grandmaster Karsten Mueller, annotates each game of the player many believe to be the greatest of all time. Almost 1,000 annotated games are supplemented by crosstables of every major tournament and match in which Fischer participated, dozens of archival photographs, along with brief comments and observations putting the play of the great champion into historical perspective.

About the Author
Karsten Mueller is one of the best chess authors in the world today. His ChessCafe Puzzle Book series is a widely acclaimed best selling series. Other notable titles include Fundamental Chess Endings (with Frank Lamprecht) and the Magic of chess Tactics (with Claus Meyer).

Nigel Davies - Attack with the Modern Italian (Videoless)

In recent years the Italian Game has undergone a renaissance, transforming it from the Cinderella of 1.e4 openings into a major system which offers excellent chances for White to gain the advantage.

Accordingly it has found favour with some of the World`s top players including Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Sergei Tiviakov, Viktor Bologan, Sergei Movsesian, Michael Adams and Boris Gelfand. Unlike the Ruy Lopez, which features many sharp theoretical variations, the emphasis in the Italian Game is on knowing where the pieces belong and understanding key plans and ideas. This makes it highly suitable for players who do not have the time to engage in ongoing maintenance of their opening systems. On this DVD Davies examines the modern treatment of the Italian with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 followed by 4.d3 and then usually c3. He also places the onus on attacking lines for White, often featuring him castling queenside and then charging up the kingside. Not only do such variations score heavily in club chess, they are also a lot of fun to play! Video runnig time: 4 hours Nigel

Davies has been an International Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Open Quickplay and U21 Champion. Besides his playing accomplishments he is an experienced chess coach with an excellent understanding of club level chess. As such he is able to present advanced material in a way that club players can get to grips with it making his DVDs a unique learning resource.

Efstratios Grivas - Beating the Fianchetto Defences

Grivas provides a full and detailed repertoire for White against five important openings: the Grünfeld, King's Indian, Benoni, Benko and Modern. In each case, he has recommended a line in which he has a wealth of experience, and has played a significant personal role in developing over many years. The recommendations are geared towards posing Black unconventional problems: your opponents will not be able to churn out lengthy memorized variations, but will need to solve problems at the board in positions that are somewhat different in character from those normally reached in these openings. Grivas has also chosen the repertoire so that it forms a seamless whole, and will fit alongside an English or Réti move-order, in addition to a standard 1 d4 repertoire.
Grandmaster Efstratios Grivas lives in Athens and is also a Senior FIDE Trainer, International Arbiter and Organizer. He has represented his country on a great many occasions, winning an individual gold medal at the 1989 European Team Championship and an individual silver medal at the 1998 Olympiad. He is a federal trainer and an experienced writer. This is his second book on chess openings for Gambit.

Review by John Donaldson at jeremysilman.com
Beating the Fianchetto Defences is an opening repertoire book based on 1.d4 and 2.c4 (though it would also work for many players who open with 1.Nf3 or 1.d4 and 2.Nf3) with the defining characteristic that White develops his King Knight to f3.

Grunfeld: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Bg5

King's Indian: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0-0 6.h3

Modern Benoni: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 e6 4.Nc3 exd5 5.cxd5 d6 6.e4 g6 7.Nf3 Bg7 8.h3 0-0 9.Bd3

Benko Gambit: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5 4.Nf3

Modern Defense: 1.d4 g6 2.c4 Bg7 3.Nc3 d6 4.Nf3

GM Grivas is a believer in move-by-move analysis and there is plenty of it. In particular I would point out the Grunfeld variation with 5.Bg5 where he is one of the world's great experts. Grivas also does a good job of explaining the ideas and typical motifs of each variation. Each chapter gives model games with typical endgames and characteristic middlegames that are carefully chosen.

If you are rated 2000 on up, looking for a stable opening repertoire, and have a positional style, this book is for you. I would not be surprised to find a companion volume in preparation covering Black's other responses to 1.d4. Just to know, Grivas meets the 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 with 3.Nf3 and the Queen's Indian with 4.g3. Highly recommended.

Beliavsky O., Mikhalchishin A., Tyutyunnyk R. - Lviv Gambit (CBV)

This book contains information about the evolution of chess variation known as Lviv Gambit. Variants of further development of such position are considered. Authors managed to gather parties in wich this gambit was used.
For all those interested in chess.

This gambit attempt to meet Dutch Defence is of course similar to Staunton Gambit, but the essence of play in both gambits is different. In Sweden was developed and played on practice Sjodin gambit, which is very similar to Lviv gambit: 1.d4 e6 2.Nf3 f5 3.e4 fxe4 4.Ng5 Nf6 5.f3. Lviv gambit appeared in practice late enough - in XX century. First analyses were done by chessplayers from Lviv (in that time Lemberg), articles were published in Polish chess magazine, as Lviv was annexed by Poland. On the high level gambit was applied by famous Leningrad theoretical Lisitsin and in some sources Gambit was named after him. But most of the specialists agreed that gambit was developed by Lviv chessplayers and has to be called Lviv gambit. For example, what wrote the great Mikhail Botvinnik "The start reaction to the Black's attempt to play Dutch Defence. The position is too open and White succesfully fights the initiative". Gambit was played by such great players as Ju. Bogoljubov, L. Szabo,V. Pirc,K. RobatchandS. Gligoric. Among modern grandmasters gambit fans are J. Lautier, J. Piket, R. Vaganian, C. Hansen, P. San Segundo, M. Rohde, R. Kempinski and B. Damljanovic. An the beginning Lviv gambit was played in such way 1.Nf3 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.Ng5. Main idea was after 3. ...Qxd5 to play 4.d3 exd3 5.Bxd3 Qxg2 6.Be4 Qg4 7.Qxg4 Bxg4 8.Bxb7 winning the Rook. But after some time players from Lviv realized that after 1.Nf3 f5 Lviv gambit idea 2.e4! is extremely effective. Alekhin in his comment to Bogoljubov-Tartakover game from Nottingham, 1936, called gambit not Lisitsin but Lviv and wrote that 1.Nf3 f5 can't be recommendated. Modern theory doesn't share these extreme view, Alekhins idea has to be considered very serious.

Andrew Martin - The Budapest Gambit (Videoless)

Most chess players are naturally talented, but do not have the time to devote to chess theory, such is the pace of modern life. Yet it is human nature to want to do things well and to achieve good results. To make the right choice of opening system is therefore of crucial importance for these players if they want to make the most of what they have. Below master level and especially with Black, the most crucial thing is to strive for the initiative. It is absolutely no good trying to gradually equalize. Leave that to Karpov, Kramnik and the world championship matches, where we can admire the defensive technique from afar.

Try this style at club level and one ends up exhausted and frustrated. Pressurizing the opponent means getting on to the attack and this is where the fiery Budapest Gambit comes into play. After 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e5 Black immediately takes the fight to White at the cost of a pawn. Active piece play is the predominant theme. Tactics abound. White can lose in a few moves if he or she does not know what they are doing. A life and death struggle is rarely what the White player wants at such an early stage of the game. At the very least the position will be laced with interest. Study of the Budapest Gambit will place an extremely dangerous weapon into the hands of the club player. Video running time: 4 hours 20 min.

International Master Andrew Martin is also the English Chess Federation Manager of Coaching. He is 51 years old and lives in Sandhurst, England. This is his 17th DVD for Chessbase.

Andrew Martin - Starting Out The Sicilian Dragon (version CBV)

They will fill a serious gap in the current chess literature, and I'm sure they will be extremely popular with amateur chess players."--Chessville.com

"The ideal opening training manuals."--Glenn Flear, New In Chess

Product Description
Few would disagree that the Sicilian Dragon is one of the most exciting, high profile and controversial openings in chess history. Right from the very beginning of the game Black chooses to unbalance the position, thus maximising his or her chances of playing for a win. The positions reached are dynamic and of a highly tactical nature, with both players very often going straight for each other's throats in search of a quick-fire knockout blow. In these razor-sharp encounters, it goes without saying that one slip by either side can prove to be fatal. Because of its aggressive nature, the Sicilian Dragon is very popular at all levels of chess, while it received an ultimate seal of approval when Garry Kasparov used it as his main weapon to beat Vishy Anand in a World Championship match. "In Starting Out: The Sicilian Dragon" Andrew Martin studies this famous opening in a simplistic way, introducing the crucial initial moves and ideas and taking care to explain the reasoning behind them, something that has sometimes been neglected or taken for granted. As with previous works in the popular "Everyman Chess Starting Out" series, the reader is helped throughout with a plethora of notes, tips and warnings highlighting the vital characteristics of the Sicilian Dragon and of opening play in general. It is written by an openings expert. All main lines of the Sicilian Dragon are covered. It is ideal for the improving player.

Dražen Marović - Secrets of Chess Transformations

Dražen Marović is a veteran grandmaster with experience as a player, trainer, writer, editor and television commentator. Following three of his recent books from the same publisher, Understanding Pawn Play in Chess (2000), Dynamic Pawn Play in Chess (2001), and Secrets of Positional Chess (2003), Marović’s recent Secrets of Chess Transformations (2004) would be of interest even if it were titled simply GM Marovic Presents Over 250 Chess Positions, Old and New, With Notes and Explanations. The author aims for more than that:

Understanding Pawn Play in Chess discussed elementary pawn-structures, Dynamic Pawn Play in Chess dealt with the center and its subtle relation with pawn-formations, and Secrets of Positional Chess focused on the strength and weakness of pieces and space... In writing this book, my intention was to throw more light on the essence of the game of chess, its never-ending changing of values, the unceasing metamorphosis of the three elements it consists of – material, space and time...

This is the alchemy that a successful chess player performs: starting only with the advantage of the first move, relentlessly adjusting and increasing and transforming one advantage into another; collecting what an opponent contributes, and folding it in; arriving at the amalgamated end product: 1-0.

The Table of Contents of Secrets of Chess Transformations bears this out:

Part 1: Material and Time
Material and Time: Introduction
Pseudo-Sacrifices
Sacrificial Risks: Zwischenzug
Sacrificial Risks: Counter-Sacrifice
Sacrificial Risks: Simplification

Lead in Development

Part 2: Space and Time
