Eingorn-Bogdanov: Chess Explained The French

Chess Explained books provide an understanding of an opening and the middlegames to which it leads, enabling you to find the right moves and plans in your own games. It is as if you were sitting at the board with a chess coach answering your questions about the plans for both sides, the ideas behind particular moves, and what specific knowledge you need to have.

The French Defence is one of the most important chess openings. Its qualities are such that it appeals to a wide range of chess temperaments: it is solid yet uncompromising, and with a variety of chaotic variations to appeal to the most bloodthirsty of players, but also offering more tranquil lines to those seeking a quieter existence. While it is hard for White to avoid at least some imbalance in the position, he also has a wide choice. In some of the most critical lines, he accepts major structural weaknesses in return for piece-play and dynamic chances, while he can also seek to establish a modest space advantage without such heavy positional commitments.

Viacheslav Eingorn is an extremely experienced grandmaster from Ukraine. He played regularly and successfully in the Top League of the USSR Championship in the 1980s, and is the author of Decision-Making at the Chessboard and Creative Chess Opening Preparation. International Master Valentin Bogdanov has over thirty years' experience as a chess trainer, and is also from Ukraine. His pupils include Moskalenko, Savchenko and Drozdovsky, and he has acted as a second for Eingorn since the late 1970s.

Alexander Nikitin - Defensa Sicilana: Variante Scheveningen

If you do not know opening theory in its most intimate details, then you must rely on a sound understanding of chess. But sometimes, that is not enough, because opening traps lurk everywhere, relying on the unwary making “normal” moves – developing a piece, making a capture, setting or parrying a threat. But after that the reply is mainly an unusual and therefore an unexpected one – a sacrifi ce, a piece moves to an unusual square or an expected recapture is omitted in favour of another, better move. In this work, the authors have a twofold aim in view; if you wish, you can master the traps within the area of your own openings. But you can also systematically attempt to extend your opening repertoire in order to set some traps yourself.

All the features at a glance:

suited to advanced players
main database contains 1000 traps from A00-E99
20 introductory texts
classification into traps and opening blunders
database of motifs
training database
About the authors Grandmaster Dr. Karsten Müller has for many years contributed to ChessBase (including work on the Centre Counter (Scandinavian), endgames, the Lasker- CD, the Morphy-CD), but has also already published books on the themes of tactics and endgames. Grandmaster Rainer Knaak has already published various CDs in ChessBase (including Attacking the castled king, Trompowsky Attack) and is the editor of ChessBase Magazine and the Mega Database

Dmitrij Oleinikov - How to Play the Queen’s Indian

With his previous publications (ChessBase-CDs: Budapest Gambit, Bird‘s Opening, Colle System) the author has already demonstrated, that he is particularly interested in passing on ideas, typical structures and plans. His new work is no exception. But how can that work with such an enormous opening as the Queen‘s Indian? This is how hegoes about things:

a database which provides an overview and contains 16 texts and 368 carefully chosen sample games, over 100 of which he has annotated himself
a chapter which explains the basic strategy
2 texts with appropriate introduction for 12 brilliant games by Black and by White
a chapter on typical tactics including opening traps
2 chapters on „typical pawn structures“ and on „piece behaviour“
a further database „Strategy“ with 33 game extracts and 54 training questions
another database „Tactics and traps“ with 33 game extracts and 55 training questions
classic Queen‘s Indian games with lots of explanations
theory in the usual sense, i.e. variations and sub-variations, is kept to a minimum
The work is supplied with a large database of over 78,000 games.

About the author:
Dmitri Oleinikov lives in Moscow and is a journalist. He has worked as a trainer with various Russian teams. He is a FIDEtrainer and worked in 2004-2006 as a trainer in the Asian Chess Academy (Singapore).

Nigel Davies - Bamboozle your opponents with 1.g3 (Videoless)

Opening a game with 1.g3 appears rather quiet and unpretentious yet many of the greatest players in history have chosen to play this way. Bent Larsen, Victor Korchnoi, Leonid Stein and Pal Benko have all wielded this move with considerable success whilst in more recent times Mikhail Gurevich has been using it highly effectively.

The idea behind this opening is to leave White with the greatest possible flexibility for his pieces and pawns and indeed the game can transpose into openings as diverse as the Closed Sicilian, the King’s Indian Defence and the Catalan Opening. Yet White can also choose to tread new ground by adopting formations such as a reversed Leningrad Dutch, reversed Alekhine’s Defence or even a reversed Pirc or Modern Defence. All of these formations contain far more poison with White’s extra tempo. On this DVD Davies explains key concepts and ideas behind these unique approaches, whilst also showing how White can transpose into more regular openings if he show chooses. This can provide many opportunities for throwing the opponent on his own resources as well as wrong footing him into something he does not know. Video runnig time: 4 hours

Nigel Davies has been an International Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Open Quickplay and U21 Champion. Besides his playing accomplishments he is an experienced chess coach with an ability to explain chess ideas players of any level. He is an acknowledged expert on 1.g3 having played it on numerous occasions in his own games.
