Maurice Ashley - What Grandmasters Don’t See Vol. 1: Protected Squares

Many times when a top player blunders, it is routinely described by the esoteric term „chess blindness.“ In the series What Grandmasters Don‘t See, chess trainer and world-class commentator Maurice Ashley strips away the myth, and for the first time explains why the root of these mistakes is more often based on the psychology of human learning.
In Volume 1 of the series, Ashley coins a new term Protected Squares, and shows how many errors occur on squares that seem invulnerable because they are clearly guarded by pawns. In example after example and in his trademark style, Ashley will teach you how to avoid this kind of mistake and how to look for moves that will shock and amaze your opponents. In the first 19 videos on the DVD Ashley demonstrates both well-known and little known games in which a move on to a protected square plays an important part. In the second half of the DVD you are tested on what you have learned about protected squares with a series of exercises of increasing difficulty. This material is also drawn both from classics and from recent games. Video running time: 4 hours 18 minutes.

Andrew Martin - The Queens Gambit Declined (Videoless)

The Queens Gambit Declined, Orthodox Variation is an opening choice for Black which will never be refuted. It perhaps has an unjust reputation of being solid and passive, but this all-new ChessBase DVD will challenge that perception. Basing his Black repertoire on the Cambridge Springs variation, Andrew Martin takes you on a tour of classic games, showing how Black may conveniently sidestep the dangerous lines with Bf4, whilst retaining good chances and providing comprehensive coverage of the lines where White captures early on d5. This is a repertoire which will suit all levels of player. Video running time: 4 hours 23 min.

Dejan Bojkov - A modern way to play the King's Indian (Videoless)

The Zürich Interzonal of 1953 and the marvellous annotations of David Bronstein changed our understanding of the KID. From a second-class opening, it became one of the most aggressive and dangerous setups for the second player. Back in those days players tended to develop their queen’s knight to d7. Later a more central approach came into fashion and the knight found a good square on c6. Current practice though, has revealed that there is one more good square for that piece - the a6 one. From this new outpost the knight is heading for the centre without obstructing its own bishop. Bulgarian GM Dejan Bojkov is one of the true supporters of such a development. In this DVD you will find a repertoire based on flexible development whenever possible, and an explanation of some strategic nuances of the KID. The author shares with you a lot of novelties that he had prepared throughout his study of the lines. Video running time: 5 hours.

Valery Lilov - Unorthodox Chess Openings (Videoless)

How many times have you been caught off guard by a seemingly inferior and unusual opening system that later turns out to be an especially strong one? Unorthodox openings can be a real asset to anyone’s opening repertoire and they often do not contain much theory, making them easy to master for your next important tournament. In the present DVD, FM Valeri Lilov devotes 24 lectures to various unorthodox openings - some more popular with super GMs like Alexander Morozevich and others less known - yet all aiming at one and the same goal: to strengthen your opening repertoire and provide you with more weapons for the opening stage. The DVD is naturally divided into two parts and half of the lectures explore openings for White, while the other half focus on great unorthodox systems for Black. The Chigorin Defence, the Chicago Gambit, and Grob’s Attack are among the systems included for White. On the other hand, the Hippopotamus Defence and the Elephant Gambit, both for Black, bear the names of frightening animals. FM Valeri Lilov effectively teaches the best plans and ideas in each of these unique openings and guarantees success with each and every one of them. Video running time: 5 hrs 16 min.

Adrian Mikhalchishin - Strategy University Vol 2: Prevention and Preparation in Chess

The great Aaron Nimzowitsch wrote the key sentence: Neither attack nor defence is the essence of positional play, but prophylaxis! Prophylaxis consists of different measures taken against the opponent’s tactical threats and strategic plans. But don’t think that the prevention of your opponent’s plan is purely defensive. It is simply part of the preparation of our plan! This difficult, but extremely important subject is explained on the DVD with the help of many examples, including classics but also modern games. Video running time: 3 hrs 30 min.

Adrian Mikhalchishin - Strategy University Vol. 1: The Central Approach (Videoless)

The centre is the most important part of the battlefi eld. In chess we study various different kinds of centre, some special forms of which were already discussed on the DVD ‘Winning Structures’. But in chess literature we have a huge lack of educational material on the role of the centre and on the power of pawns and pieces in the centre. And the most important part which is missing - how to change the pawn structure in the centre. This is really the knowledge which marks out the champions, and on this DVD with the help of classical games played by Botvinnik, Fischer, Rubinstein, Steinitz, Tal amongst others the author explains all these important problems. Video running time: 3 hrs 50 min.

Sam Collins - Know the Terrain vol 1: The Carlsbad (Videoless)

The information explosion has led to a massive increase in opening theory. But how often do you win a game with a prepared line? What gives strong players the edge over their opponents is not some blockbuster novelty, but a deep understanding of the pawn structures to which their openings lead – an understanding that lasts into the middlegame and endgame, and is transferrable between different openings with similar structures. In this DVD, Sam Collins examines one of the most important structures in chess, the Carlsbad. Long the playground of the world champions, whether with Karpov’s classical approach of Nf3 or Botvinnik and Kasparov’s incredible results with Nge2 and f3, the Carlsbad has an enormous strategic potential for White (exemplified by the legendary “minority attack”) countered by Black’s deceptively simple kingside counterplay. Video running time: 7 hours

Andrew Martin -- ABC Benko Gambit 2nd Edition (Videoless)

Black sacrifices a pawn as early as move three for enduring positional pressure. On this new ChessBase DVD, International Master Andrew Martin traces the history of the gambit from the games of Opocensky, Lundin and Stoltz back in the 1930s, through the golden age of Bronstein, Benko and Browne all the way to the present day, where the gambit is as popular as ever. Martin describes the main themes and ideas of the gambit and gives sound guide lines, so that any one who wants to play for the initiative with Black and play the Benko Gambit, will be very well equipped. Do you want to play for the initiative with Black? Then the Benko Gambit is surely for you. The DVD contains 6 hours video lessons, the latest ChessBase 9.0 Reader as well as an unannotated database of the contents. The 2010 update includes many recent games from top-class play and produces a balanced portrait of how the gambit stands today. Critical lines such as the Fianchetto variation with an early Rb1 are examined closely and Black is found to be in good shape. The Benko Gambit seems as playable as ever! Video running time: 6 hours

Nigel Davies - Attack with the Modern Italian (Videoless)

In recent years the Italian Game has undergone a renaissance, transforming it from the Cinderella of 1.e4 openings into a major system which offers excellent chances for White to gain the advantage.

Accordingly it has found favour with some of the World`s top players including Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Sergei Tiviakov, Viktor Bologan, Sergei Movsesian, Michael Adams and Boris Gelfand. Unlike the Ruy Lopez, which features many sharp theoretical variations, the emphasis in the Italian Game is on knowing where the pieces belong and understanding key plans and ideas. This makes it highly suitable for players who do not have the time to engage in ongoing maintenance of their opening systems. On this DVD Davies examines the modern treatment of the Italian with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 followed by 4.d3 and then usually c3. He also places the onus on attacking lines for White, often featuring him castling queenside and then charging up the kingside. Not only do such variations score heavily in club chess, they are also a lot of fun to play! Video runnig time: 4 hours Nigel

Davies has been an International Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Open Quickplay and U21 Champion. Besides his playing accomplishments he is an experienced chess coach with an excellent understanding of club level chess. As such he is able to present advanced material in a way that club players can get to grips with it making his DVDs a unique learning resource.

Karsten Müller - 1000 Opening Traps

If you do not know opening theory in its most intimate details, then you must rely on a sound understanding of chess. But sometimes, that is not enough, because opening traps lurk everywhere, relying on the unwary making “normal” moves – developing a piece, making a capture, setting or parrying a threat. But after that the reply is mainly an unusual and therefore an unexpected one – a sacrifi ce, a piece moves to an unusual square or an expected recapture is omitted in favour of another, better move. In this work, the authors have a twofold aim in view; if you wish, you can master the traps within the area of your own openings. But you can also systematically attempt to extend your opening repertoire in order to set some traps yourself.

All the features at a glance:

suited to advanced players
main database contains 1000 traps from A00-E99
20 introductory texts
classification into traps and opening blunders
database of motifs
training database
About the authors Grandmaster Dr. Karsten Müller has for many years contributed to ChessBase (including work on the Centre Counter (Scandinavian), endgames, the Lasker- CD, the Morphy-CD), but has also already published books on the themes of tactics and endgames. Grandmaster Rainer Knaak has already published various CDs in ChessBase (including Attacking the castled king, Trompowsky Attack) and is the editor of ChessBase Magazine and the Mega Database

Dmitrij Oleinikov - How to Play the Queen’s Indian

With his previous publications (ChessBase-CDs: Budapest Gambit, Bird‘s Opening, Colle System) the author has already demonstrated, that he is particularly interested in passing on ideas, typical structures and plans. His new work is no exception. But how can that work with such an enormous opening as the Queen‘s Indian? This is how hegoes about things:

a database which provides an overview and contains 16 texts and 368 carefully chosen sample games, over 100 of which he has annotated himself
a chapter which explains the basic strategy
2 texts with appropriate introduction for 12 brilliant games by Black and by White
a chapter on typical tactics including opening traps
2 chapters on „typical pawn structures“ and on „piece behaviour“
a further database „Strategy“ with 33 game extracts and 54 training questions
another database „Tactics and traps“ with 33 game extracts and 55 training questions
classic Queen‘s Indian games with lots of explanations
theory in the usual sense, i.e. variations and sub-variations, is kept to a minimum
The work is supplied with a large database of over 78,000 games.

About the author:
Dmitri Oleinikov lives in Moscow and is a journalist. He has worked as a trainer with various Russian teams. He is a FIDEtrainer and worked in 2004-2006 as a trainer in the Asian Chess Academy (Singapore).

Catalan E00-E09 - Mihail Marin

Dorian Rogozenko - La Defensa Eslava

Boris Schipkov - Bogo Indian Defence

The Bogo-Indian (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Bb4+) stands out for two reasons: the concept behind the opening is simple and therefore easy to learn; and the Bogo-Indian has the reputation of being a reliable drawing weapon (statistically backed up by a high number of draws with it). This makes it an excellent second choice opening and it is on occasion used as such even by many world class players.

Schipkov explains in 21 texts the ideas behind the Bogo-Indian Defense and provides links to the most important model games. Our author has annotated some 400 of these exclusively for this CD. In addition it contains a training database with 20 games in it, which contain between them more than 250 training questions. The CD is rounded off with a tree of all the 17,500 games.

About the author: the Russian chess theorist Boris Schipkov, born in 1962, lives in Novosibirsk and has already published a number of books and articles, including the ChessBase CDs "Queen’s Gambit Accepted", "Dutch Defence A90-A99", "Dutch Defence A86-A89", "Dutch Defence A80-A85" and "King’s Indian Defence, Sämisch System". He is the editor in chief of the online magazine "Chess Siberia".

Don Maddox: Ataque Indio de Rey

La construcción de un repertorio de aperturas puede ser una tarea desalentadora. Así que mucho que aprender;
tan poco tiempo. India de Rey Attack (KIA) ofrece una notable
solución de tres puntos para este problema:

1) Un repertorio hipermoderna universal basado en NF3/d2-d3/g2-g3/Bg2;
