Efstratios Grivas - Beating the Fianchetto Defences

Grivas provides a full and detailed repertoire for White against five important openings: the Grünfeld, King's Indian, Benoni, Benko and Modern. In each case, he has recommended a line in which he has a wealth of experience, and has played a significant personal role in developing over many years. The recommendations are geared towards posing Black unconventional problems: your opponents will not be able to churn out lengthy memorized variations, but will need to solve problems at the board in positions that are somewhat different in character from those normally reached in these openings. Grivas has also chosen the repertoire so that it forms a seamless whole, and will fit alongside an English or Réti move-order, in addition to a standard 1 d4 repertoire.
Grandmaster Efstratios Grivas lives in Athens and is also a Senior FIDE Trainer, International Arbiter and Organizer. He has represented his country on a great many occasions, winning an individual gold medal at the 1989 European Team Championship and an individual silver medal at the 1998 Olympiad. He is a federal trainer and an experienced writer. This is his second book on chess openings for Gambit.

Beating the Fianchetto Defences is an opening repertoire book based on 1.d4 and 2.c4 (though it would also work for many players who open with 1.Nf3 or 1.d4 and 2.Nf3) with the defining characteristic that White develops his King Knight to f3.

Grunfeld: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Bg5

King's Indian: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0-0 6.h3

GM Grivas is a believer in move-by-move analysis and there is plenty of it. In particular I would point out the Grunfeld variation with 5.Bg5 where he is one of the world's great experts. Grivas also does a good job of explaining the ideas and typical motifs of each variation. Each chapter gives model games with typical endgames and characteristic middlegames that are carefully chosen.

If you are rated 2000 on up, looking for a stable opening repertoire, and have a positional style, this book is for you. I would not be surprised to find a companion volume in preparation covering Black's other responses to 1.d4. Just to know, Grivas meets the 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 with 3.Nf3 and the Queen's Indian with 4.g3. Highly recommended.
